Temporary ‘Short-Term’ Health Insurance

Temporary or “Short-Term” health insurance coverage lasts from 30 days to twelve months. The total length of coverage cannot exceed twelve months with a single carrier. To get additional coverage you have to switch carriers or have a six-month gap between policies.

For people that are:
In between jobs or laid off
Graduated from college
Waiting for group coverage to take effect
Waiting for individual coverage to be approved
Coming off your parents plan
Traveling
Plans Cover:
Doctors Services
Hospital Charges
Prescription Drugs
X-rays & Lab Tests
Durable Medical Equipment

Plans usually have a choice of several deductibles and all the benefits are subject to the deductible. After the deductible is satisfied the plan has a percentage you pay (i.e. you pay 20% and the plan pays 80%). You pay this percentage until you reach a maximum out of pocket limit and then the carrier pays 100% of all the rest of the covered expenses.

These plans can sometimes be used as alternatives for people that have problems that prevent them from getting individual coverage.
