CDC: Neurologic disorders raise children’s risk of dying from flu

CDC researchers looked at flu-related deaths during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic and found that 68% of children who died from the flu suffered from an underlying medical condition, and of those, 64% had a neurologic condition such as epilepsy, cerebral palsy or mental disability. The flu is particularly dangerous for children with problems in “muscle function, lung function or difficulty coughing, swallowing or clearing fluids from their airways,” study co-author Dr. Georgina Peacock said. The findings were published in the journal Pediatrics. Disability Scoop (8/29), Associated Press (8/29)
