Fitness in midlife may stave off chronic diseases later

Medicare claims data on more than 18,600 healthy men and women revealed that middle-aged adults with the highest levels of cardiorespiratory fitness had a more than 40% reduced incidence of chronic diseases later in life compared with adults with the lowest fitness levels. Researchers also found that increased fitness levels can delay chronic conditions and reduce the duration of illness. The findings appear in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
