Voluntary watch: The money-saving case for vision coverage

Offering vision benefits can reduce spending at a large business by an average of $100,000 over four years, a study of six large employers found. Vision screening can detect chronic conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension, and employees with vision plans are more likely to get regular screenings than employees without access to vision benefits, the study found. People whose chronic condition was identified through an eye exam were 26.7% less likely to seek care at a hospital or emergency department than people whose chronic condition was identified by another type of provider.
