Many baby boomers have chronic illnesses and will eventually need long-term care but do not have the means to pay for it, according to a study sponsored by the National Institute on Aging. Americans have fewer children and higher divorce rates than in the past, leaving fewer avenues for help with funding long-term care, and the average cost for private nursing home care in 2010 was $229 per day — about $84,000 per year.
